I watch LOADS of All in the Family. Archie SAID a lot of bigotted and racist things, but when it came down to DOING something, he always DID the right thing. I remember Edith was ill and they had to hired a housekeeper, and she was black. Archie went to the grocery store with her, and people were harassing her, and he stepped in and stood up for her.

Everyone watching knew that Archie Bunker and George Jefferson were EXACTLY the same. The wives and kids all got along. And, by the way, "Al Jolson" calling his mom "Mammy" - He was a famous Jewish man who sang a song in blackface. "Mammy". It was in the very first talkie movie.

I believe the minimum wage back then was something like $1.35/hr so $5.50 was pretty good. A new car was only 4 or 5 thousand dollars

There were loads of shows on TV that attacked racism. They were all showing us that blacks and whites were the same. Some shows were about blacks and whites getting along. Some were about racists. And some were just sitcom with different colored casts, like Sanford and Son. We could only watch what the TV was playing. So if Sanford and Son was on, that's what we ALL watched.

I was a teenager when this on TV. If someone was racist, they were the bad guy. George Jefferson was black and he was JUST as racist. But now that I am much older, I realize that Archie was the only on with a job. Liberal meathead Mike was living there for free. Typical Liberal mooch.

This show helped a lot of people see the absurdity of their beliefs. People really did and do talk like this in their homes and to refuse to allow it on media just brushes it under rug and does not encourage open discourse.

He represents a bigot. This was a fantastic show in the 1970's. It was a way to serve a palatable dish to those who would slowly eat it and begin to realize how awful it tasted.

Very late to this party... I am a typical Gen-Xer. I was a kid in the 70's and teen in the 80's. I was too young to remember when "All in the Family" Debuted in 1971. By the time I remember episodes of All in the Family, the show was into it's 3rd or 4th season. Most of the time the jokes sailed over my head. But my parents would sometimes roll onto the floor laughing. Archie Bunker was called "America's favorite Bigot" or "America's loveable bigot". Archie Bunker was NOT written as a straight up racist. His character was written as an ignorant bigot. Carol O'Conner (The actor who played Archie Bunker) knew the best way to deal with bigotry in America was to hold up a mirror and make American's laugh at it. He was a loveable kind of person, actually kind at heart, but simply dug in to his preconceived notions of how the world should work. Mr. O'Conner and the other writers realized that portraying a Cross-burning, KKK racist would NEVER work. They knew that Americans would HATE a character like that. But a "lovable Bigot" could work... it remined SOOO many Americans of their own parents and relatives. It dealt with the issue of bigotry without bashing everyone's head in screaming "You're evil". THAT kind of message would never work. Most kids don't see their parents as evil... mislead and mis-informed,... sure. But evil... no. THAT was Archie Bunker. The longer the show progressed, the more Archie Bunker's character developed. And over the show's history, his views began to moderate. There were episodes when Archie was confronted with "Real" racism or antisemitism and Archie would end up defending those he would make fun of in earlier years. All in the Family was one of the most important sit-coms to come out of the 70's. American's got to laugh at their own backwards beliefs, and over time marginalized groups of people were "normalized" in the minds of the vast majority of our population. Which was the goal of the show.

I’m new to your channel &, I just wanted to touch on a comment one of you made ( not familiar with ya’ll so, can’t remember your name ). It was said that the show was probably created to cause discord back in the day. I was born in 1968 so, I was quite young when the country was just beginning to move forward after civil rights movement & so on. I was watching these shows ( Archie Bunker, The Jefferson’s, Sanford & Son &, Good Times ) growing up. In my opinion, these comedic sitcoms were touching somewhat on the controversial issue of racism among all American families @ a time that, people were on the cusp of pushing forward after civil rights movement &, new laws moved the country in new directions of inclusion ( idk if I’m conveying this correctly ). But, point being these shows were just conveying the struggle to change mind sets were the same for each side &, was meant to be viewed light-heartedly. Yes, Archie had some racist tendencies/views but, he was also growing as, he struggled with the concept of how times were changing. George Jefferson was himself, also shown to be racist towards whites in his reactions, comments & ideology- same as Archie….just on opposite side of racial perspective. In closing….the shows ( afore mentioned ) were trying to bring a comedic respite to the viewers saying “ the times indeed are a-changing &, we are all stumbling our way through this change . “ They are all great shows & all have a moral in each episode &, I loved, laughed &, understood each one of them. Peace & Blessings ❤

u guys totally mist it This is Norman Lear the only purpose of this show and many others is to make Conservatives look stupid and bigoted and linking Christianity with it and u wonder y ppl actually hold these opinions and dont bother to research the actual history thas y mos ppl think evolution is science (it absolutely is not) and God is all this mythology u guys completely fell for it, jus like in the 70's this was y many associated Rush w/ Archie which is completely absurd. Carroll O'Conner was not Archie at all which made him complicit w/ Normal Lear's true purpose

All In The Family exposed the ridiculousness of bigotry & racism. Archie opened our eyes and our attitudes about being racist. Although he brought so much laughter to us, Archie increased understanding, unity, fairness, and respect for other races. In real life, the man who played Archie was an advocate for fairness, acceptance, and inclusion, teaching whites that racism is not only bad for the minorities….it is bad for EVERYONE. Instead of causing division, disrespect, and hatred like the left pushes consistently, it brought people together, forced to look at the ugliness of racism…and how bad it made the racist look. And that it was bad for every person regardless of skin color. Instead of hatred and prejudice, Archie taught that acceptance and equality were better choices.

GenX in the house! I was raised on this show. Did you know Archie and Edith's chairs are in the Smithsonian? This wasn't just a tv show. It was a cultural phenomenon. Archie was a WASP: White Anglo Saxon Protestant. Irish and Italians were Catholic. Definitely not considered the same ethnic groups. I loved when you noticed that he had a certain charm. He was so many of our fathers. We loved him, but hated his views. It was complex. Over time you see his views challenged and he slowly and ever so slightly changed. It was beautiful and hopeful. Legendary show ❤
